Magnesium deficiency, she said, affected a significant share of the global population, with figures in different studies ranging from 15% to 50%. In the US, she noted, as many as half of Americans may fall short. In Germany, Japan and among specific health groups, the numbers were similarly troubling.
The point was not merely statistical. It was cultural. Deficiency, in Armstead’s account, had become both widespread and invisible, masked by symptoms that were often attributed to busyness, burnout or age.
Why Even Healthy Diets May No Longer Be Enough
If the audience arrived expecting the usual scolding about lifestyle, Armstead offered something more unsettling. The problem, she argued, was not only what people chose to eat, but what food itself had become.
“The problem is the quality of food is declining. So vegetables and fruit have now significantly less magnesium than they had 50 years ago,” she said.
Processing, she added, could remove as much as 80% of the mineral. Intensive farming, environmental degradation and depleted soils compounded the loss. The result was a modern paradox: people could make increasingly informed nutritional choices and still fail to get enough of a basic, essential nutrient.
She also pointed to gastrointestinal disorders, malnutrition and psychological stress as contributors. Stress, in this telling, was not only an outcome of deficiency but one of its drivers, tightening the loop between biology and daily life.

Armstead cited clinical findings suggesting improvements in executive function, attention, episodic memory and working memory after supplementation. She also described evidence that participants experienced gains in cognitive speed and a measurable reduction in what she called cognitive fluctuation, those uneven mental days that so many in the room appeared to recognise.
Her framing was quietly radical. Chronological age, she argued, did not necessarily match functional brain age. If decline could be accelerated by deficiency, perhaps some of it could also be slowed, or partly reversed, by restoring what had been lost.
Three Forms Of Magnesium, Three Distinct Roles

This, Armstead said, was among the most bioavailable forms, with strong relevance for restoring body magnesium levels, improving sleep quality and supporting neurological function more broadly.
Magnesium Taurate
Paired with taurine, this form was positioned as especially useful for stress regulation and sleep. Acting on GABA-related pathways in the nervous system, it may help calm neural activity and improve sleep efficiency, particularly in people with insomnia.
Together, the three compounds formed the basis of Intelligent Labs’ product, Magenhans, which Armstead presented as an attempt to address both brain and body magnesium needs in one formulation.
A Wellness Industry Pitch, But Also A Public Health Reflection
There was, inevitably, a commercial thread. Armstead invited attendees to visit the Intelligent Labs booth and try a sample. Yet the larger resonance of the talk lay beyond product promotion.
At a summit devoted to optimisation, self-experimentation and human performance, her presentation served as a reminder that the frontier of biohacking is not always exotic. Sometimes it is elemental. Sometimes the most sophisticated intervention begins with acknowledging a basic deficit.
And in a culture trained to normalise exhaustion, that message landed with force.
