On 3 July 2024 at the Biohacker Summit in Helsinki, Finland, Dr. John Lieurance took the stage with a familiar promise in the wellness world, that the route to better health lies not in chasing symptoms but in tracing them back to source. Yet what followed was less a standard supplement lecture than a sweeping manifesto on stress, inflammation, mitochondria, and the molecules he believes can shift the body back toward resilience.

Lieurance, a naturopathic physician and chiropractic neurologist known for blending functional neurology with broader integrative therapies, delivered a presentation titled Miracles of Melatonin for Anti-Aging & Longevity. His central claim was clear: modern illness, in all its complexity, often narrows to a common biological story of stress overwhelming the body’s energy systems. Melatonin, he argued, belongs at the heart of any serious conversation about how to age better.

The Root Cause Argument

For much of the talk, Lieurance returned to a phrase that has become both a rallying cry and a cliché in alternative and functional medicine: root cause. But he gave it a sharper frame.

“All diseases have the same commonality... when we go to the root,” he said.

His version of that root was mitochondrial dysfunction, driven by chronic stress and inflammation. Stress, in this account, was not merely emotional strain but a total burden placed on the body: toxins, poor sleep, psychological pressure, infection, overwork, and physiological wear. Inflammation, he suggested, was the inevitable consequence. And once inflammation reached a certain threshold, it began to interfere with mitochondria, the microscopic engines that generate cellular energy.

From there, his model of disease became elegantly simple, if sweeping. When energy production falters, the body loses the capacity to maintain health. Illness then appears not as an isolated event, but as the expression of diminished vitality.

“The body is a self-healing, self-regulating device,” Lieurance said. “We have an intelligence. We can heal.”

Vitality, Identity, And Divinity

Lieurance did not frame health solely in biochemical terms. In one of the talk’s more expansive turns, he offered a three-part philosophy: vitality, identity, and divinity.

Vitality referred to energy, life force, the measurable and unmeasurable sense of aliveness. Identity, he said, concerned one’s relationship to self, purpose, and others. Divinity pointed to direct spiritual experience, however each person defined it. If these pillars were strengthened together, he argued, they formed the basis of a meaningful life rather than merely a long one.

It was a characteristic move of the session: one moment molecular biology, the next metaphysics. For Lieurance, the two were not in competition. They were different registers of the same search for human flourishing.

Why Mitochondria Became The Battleground

The scientific spine of the talk rested on mitochondria. Lieurance described them as the true gatekeepers of resilience, determining how well the body responds to challenge and how much stress it can bear before tipping into dysfunction.

He invoked the concept of hormesis, the idea that measured stress can strengthen the system while excess stress degrades it. Exercise, fasting, learning, environmental challenge, and disciplined recovery all fit this framework. The goal, he suggested, was not to avoid stress but to remain within an “ideal health zone” where the body adapts rather than collapses.

When that adaptation fails, he argued, cells enter what is often described as a defensive metabolic state. He referenced both the “cell danger response” and the Warburg effect, terms used in different scientific contexts to describe altered energy production. In his retelling, chronic inflammation pushed mitochondria away from efficient energy generation and toward a more primitive backup mode, one that produced far less usable energy.

It was this energetic shortfall, he suggested, that explained why the body can seem unable to repair, resist infection, or recover its equilibrium.

Melatonin Beyond Sleep

The title molecule of the session arrived after a long runway. When Lieurance finally turned squarely to melatonin, he did so with evangelical force.

“Melatonin is not just for sleep... it supports the microbiome, prevents infections, and helps the body express health.”

This was the thesis of the lecture in one sentence. Melatonin, as presented by Lieurance, was not merely the hormone that nudges the body toward rest. It was a broad-spectrum defender, involved in immune signalling, inflammation control, gut balance, and mitochondrial protection. As melatonin declines with age, he said, the body’s ability to manage stress and preserve cellular energy declines with it.

He pointed in particular to the gut, arguing that melatonin plays an important role in regulating the microbiome. During sleep, he said, the body enters a state of repair and parasympathetic dominance, and melatonin helps orchestrate that transition. Light exposure by day and darkness at night remained foundational in this account, not as lifestyle garnish but as the primary rhythm governing melatonin production.

The modern indoor life, bright at night and dim by day, was presented as one more assault on a system already running hot.

The Case For High-Dose Melatonin

The most provocative part of the presentation came when Lieurance moved from melatonin as concept to melatonin as intervention. He advocated doses far beyond conventional over-the-counter use, suggesting that some patients may benefit from 100 to 200 milligrams, and in some cases more.

He anticipated resistance. Clinicians, he said, often worry that supplementation will suppress the body’s own production. But Lieurance argued that melatonin differs from many hormones in that regard and should not be understood through the same feedback-loop assumptions.

This was one of the talk’s defining tensions: a confident clinical certainty delivered in a space where the broader medical establishment remains cautious. Yet among the Biohacker Summit audience, the appeal was obvious. Here was a speaker offering not just theory, but a tool, one he has championed through years of practice, books, and public lectures.

Methylene Blue, The Supporting Molecule

Though melatonin was the headline act, methylene blue emerged as the lecture’s striking supporting character. Lieurance called it his “second favorite molecule” and praised it as a potent enhancer of mitochondrial function.

He described methylene blue as neuroprotective, energising, and potentially useful for cognition, mood, and recovery. It was, in his account, especially relevant to organs with immense energy demands, particularly the brain and heart. He also highlighted its historical use, its unusual resilience as an old compound in a novelty-driven market, and its potential role in improving mitochondrial efficiency.

The larger point was strategic. If inflammation starves the body of energy, and if mitochondria sit at the centre of health, then compounds that improve mitochondrial performance become powerful allies in the anti-aging project.

Stress, Light, Breath, And The Daily Ritual Of Repair

If the lecture had a practical moral, it was that longevity cannot be reduced to capsules. Lieurance repeatedly returned to daily rhythms and habits that support parasympathetic recovery and circadian order.

Breath work mattered. Meditation mattered. Time in natural light mattered. Darkness at night mattered. Gut health mattered. Too much sympathetic activation, he suggested, leaves the body stranded in a state of defence, unable to receive the restorative signals required for repair.

In that sense, melatonin functioned in his talk as both molecule and metaphor. It represented the body’s ability to yield, recover, and regenerate in a culture built on stimulation and depletion.

A Familiar Promise, Reframed With Conviction

There was little modesty in Lieurance’s framing. He spoke with the confidence of a practitioner who believed he had found a unifying thread beneath many forms of suffering. Not every claim sat neatly inside conventional medical consensus, and much of the dosage discussion would remain contentious in mainstream circles. But that was not the point of the room, nor of the moment.

At the Biohacker Summit, the appetite was not for caution but for possibility, for frameworks that stitched together biology, behaviour, and meaning. Lieurance met that appetite with fervour.

His final message was less about defeating age than about preserving the conditions that allow life to be fully inhabited. Guard the mitochondria. Reduce inflammation. Respect light. Repair the gut. Breathe more deeply. Sleep in darkness. Support melatonin.

Health, in his telling, was never just the absence of disease. It was the recovery of energy enough to become oneself again.
