Biohacker Summit 2024 Helsinki
From personal healing to global movement: a decade of biohacking

Teemu Arina reflects on ten years of the Biohacker Summit and the evolution of self-optimisation
At Helsinki's iconic Cable Factory, packed with health enthusiasts and technology pioneers, Teemu Arina took to the stage to celebrate a remarkable milestone. The Biohacker Summit, which he founded in 2014, marked its tenth anniversary on July 2nd with a profound exploration of how far the movement has come – and where it might be heading.
"Biohacking began as a personal journey of healing, using systems thinking to design a multi-layer protocol involving nutrition, meditation, breathwork, and supplementation," Arina told the audience, recounting how his own health crisis sparked what would become a global phenomenon.

The journey from burnout to breakthrough
The origin story of the summit is deeply personal. Arina, once a wunderkind in education technology who received the Leonardo Award under the patronage of the European Parliament and UNESCO, found himself with a chronic ulcer after years of overcommitment led to burnout.
"Every time I spoke, I got invitations to do more talks, and then suddenly I was unable to say no. I was always saying yes to everything, and that led to my own burnout," he explained.
When conventional medicine offered limited relief, Arina applied his systems thinking background to design an eight-layer health protocol incorporating nutrition, meditation, breathwork, temperature therapy, supplementation, and exercise. His recovery journey led him to extensive self-experimentation with biomarkers, genome analysis, and wearable technology – earning him the nickname "Metrics Man" in Finnish media.
Finding the others: community as catalyst
The Biohacker Summit emerged from Arina's desire to share his discoveries and connect with like-minded individuals. What began as a gathering of forty people in his office in 2014 has expanded into an international movement, with the tenth anniversary event showcasing sophisticated production elements including hexagonal stage designs symbolising sacred geometry and AI-enhanced visuals.
"The power of community is essential: bringing together pioneers across disciplines creates a vortex where something magical happens," Arina said, acknowledging the collaborative spirit that has defined the summit since its inception.
Many early participants have gone on to create influential health and wellness companies, including the founders of Oura Ring and various functional food enterprises. The summit also sparked the creation of the Biohacker's Handbook, which became Finland's most successfully crowdfunded book project.
Beyond optimisation: integrating spirituality with technology
Perhaps most striking about Arina's vision is his insistence that biohacking must transcend mere physical optimisation. Throughout the Helsinki event, he emphasised that the movement's future lies in harmonising cutting-edge technology with spiritual growth and ecological awareness.
"Harmonising with nature and spirituality is crucial; the essence of biohacking isn't just physical optimisation but cultivating purpose, ethics, and legacy for survival," he noted.
The summit itself embodied this philosophy, featuring AI-generated artwork based on nature themes alongside discussions of advanced health metrics. Arina demonstrated a custom AI system he developed that synthesises speaker presentations in real-time, generating summaries, key quotes, and supporting resources automatically.
AI as extension, not replacement
Arina's perspective on artificial intelligence stands in contrast to techno-dystopian narratives. Having spoken about AI for over a decade, he views these technologies as extensions of human capability rather than replacements.
"AI is not replacing us; it's an extension of ourselves, a collective consciousness becoming aware through the synthesis of our own output," he explained. "It's as important as the microscope or telescope: it allows us to look into complexity."
This optimistic view comes with responsibility. Arina challenged attendees to consider what they contribute to the collective consciousness that trains AI systems: "Everything we post online trains this collective consciousness—ask yourself: is this the consciousness you want to cultivate?"
The bifurcation point: personal responsibility for collective futures
The presentation concluded with a call to individual action for collective benefit. Arina positioned humanity at a critical juncture that requires new approaches and deeper wisdom.
"Our work starts with individual responsibility—fixing our own traumas, nutrition, and relationships—to collectively empower the future of humanity," he emphasised.
This integration of personal health optimisation with broader ethical concerns represents the evolution of biohacking from its early focus on measurement and enhancement toward a more holistic vision of human potential.
As the tenth anniversary celebration of the Biohacker Summit demonstrated, what began as one person's healing journey has evolved into a multifaceted exploration of how humans might thrive in an increasingly complex world. For Arina and the global community he has helped nurture, the next decade of biohacking appears focused not just on living longer or performing better, but on cultivating the wisdom necessary for humanity's sustainable future.
Frequently asked questions
How did the Biohacker Summit start?
Teemu Arina founded it in 2014, and it began as a gathering of forty people in his office. The tenth anniversary event at Helsinki's Cable Factory marked a decade of growth into an international movement, with hexagonal stage designs and AI-enhanced visuals.
What was the personal origin of the movement?
Arina, once a wunderkind in education technology who received the Leonardo Award under the patronage of the European Parliament and UNESCO, developed a chronic ulcer after years of overcommitment led to burnout. He described being unable to say no, saying yes to everything, and paying for it physically.
Where does Arina think biohacking is heading?
Beyond physical optimisation. He argued the movement's future lies in harmonising cutting-edge technology with spiritual growth and ecological awareness, and that the essence of biohacking is cultivating purpose and ethics rather than metrics alone.
