The atomic key to living beyond 120: electrons and cell voltage

Pioneering functional medicine expert reveals radical approach to longevity at HOLOLIFE Summit

At the cutting edge of longevity science, practitioners are increasingly looking beyond conventional biomarkers to the fundamental atomic mechanisms that govern aging. Last Friday, at the HOLOLIFE Summit 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia, functional medicine specialist Christian Burghardt unveiled a provocative thesis: the secret to extreme longevity lies not in expensive supplements or genetic manipulation, but in the electrical properties of our cells.

"Your body is voltage," Burghardt told the audience gathered in the Estonian capital. "If you want to deserve longevity, if you really want to get to an age of 120 and older, you have to raise your voltage, otherwise you will not make it."

The electrical foundations of life

Burghardt, CEO of MITOcare and founder of the BODI Institute in Munich, has treated over 31,000 patients during his 17-year clinical career. His presentation outlined how the aging process can be understood through basic atomic principles – specifically, the balance between electrons and protons.

According to Burghardt, a newborn's cells maintain a membrane voltage of approximately -70 millivolts, while his own at age 55 hovers around -30 millivolts despite what he termed "good biohacking" practices. This electrical potential, he argued, is the most powerful predictor of longevity at the atomic level.

"If you start reducing the voltage to minus twenty, minus ten, minus five or plus five millivolts, then you're moving towards aging," he explained. "You age, you get diseases, you are not in a good condition."

Beyond the 'hallmarks of aging'

In a departure from mainstream longevity research, which often focuses on what scientists call the "hallmarks of aging" – mitochondrial dysfunction, genomic instability, and chronic inflammation – Burghardt contended these are merely symptoms of deeper atomic imbalances.

"All these very important points are just symptoms of aging. They are not the cause," he said. "If you treat your mitochondria and you don't treat your cause, you will fail."

Instead, Burghardt identified two primary factors driving aging at the atomic level: oxidation (the loss of electrons) and hyperacidity (an excess of protons).

"Your main reason for aging is loss of electrons," he explained, using the analogy of a banana ripening from green to yellow to black. "When you're young: lots of electrons, less protons. When you're old: lots of protons, less electrons. This is aging at the atomic level."

Practical approaches to atomic rejuvenation

The solutions Burghardt proposed were surprisingly straightforward, if potentially challenging to implement. His first recommendation was consuming "alkaline raw food with lots of electrons" – essentially uncooked plant foods that maintain their electron-rich state.

"If you cook it, it's no longer raw food, it's no longer full of electrons," he cautioned, while acknowledging that a balanced diet would still include some acidic foods.

More intriguingly, Burghardt revealed he had tested a potentially breakthrough product: a "structured, non-toxic, alkaline, mineralized water gel with lots of electrons and a large number of biophotons." Applied topically, this gel allegedly delivers electrons directly into the body to repair oxidized molecules and atoms.

"You can put it wherever you want: on wounds and the wound will close in half the time; on eczema, on viruses, on inflammation spots," he claimed, adding that companies have been attempting to develop such products for fifteen years with limited success until recently.

Reframing inflammation and healing

Perhaps most radical was Burghardt's assertion about the nature of inflammation and pain. "All kinds of pain, all kind of inflammation – no matter what – means you have too many protons at this place," he stated. "The opposite is not to get more protons, but to get more electrons."

If validated, this perspective could dramatically reshape approaches to treating inflammatory conditions, suggesting that electron delivery – rather than anti-inflammatory medications – might address the root cause.

While Burghardt's theories diverge from mainstream medical consensus, they represent an intriguing frontier in the quest for extended human healthspan. As the HOLOLIFE Summit continues through the weekend in Tallinn, attendees will undoubtedly be contemplating whether the fountain of youth might be less about complex genetic interventions and more about the humble electron.

Frequently asked questions

What is Christian Burghardt's thesis about ageing?

That ageing is best understood at the atomic level, as the balance between electrons and protons, rather than through expensive supplements or genetic manipulation. Burghardt, chief executive of MITOcare and founder of the BODI Institute in Munich, has treated over 31,000 patients across a 17-year clinical career.

What is cell voltage and why does it fall?

Burghardt said a newborn's cells maintain a membrane voltage of approximately minus 70 millivolts, while his own at age 55 sat well below that. In his account the loss of that charge is the underlying process, and restoring it is the target of the intervention.

Why does he call the hallmarks of aging symptoms?

Because in his reading, mitochondrial dysfunction, genomic instability and chronic inflammation sit downstream of an atomic imbalance rather than causing it. Treat your mitochondria without treating the cause, he argued, and you have not treated ageing at all.
