On Friday, 3 June 2022, at Biohacker Summit 2022 Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland, speaker Jessica Alana took the stage with a proposition that reached far beyond the language of wellness trends and anti-aging promises. In her presentation, “Hyperbaric Oxygen for Brain Health & Optimal Recovery,” Alana argued that the body’s decline need not be accepted as a simple one-way march of time. Chronological age, she suggested, may be fixed. Biological age, by contrast, may still be negotiated.

“Biological age exists inside of us in a way that we can control, allowing us to move beyond the chronological age trapped in our three-dimensional reality,” Alana said, framing regeneration not as a luxury, but as a measurable expression of health.

Her talk fused physiological claims, biohacking ambition and a distinctly personal philosophy of medicine. It was a presentation that sought to reposition hyperbaric oxygen therapy not merely as a recovery tool, but as a technology of repair.

A Personal Mission Behind A Clinical Promise

Alana’s argument carried the force of personal conviction. Trained in biomedical sciences and serving as CEO of The Wellness Lab, a clinic operating in London and Dubai, she has built her work around hyperbaric oxygen and regenerative health. Her public profile has also been shaped by loss. Following the death of her mother in 2019 after a long struggle with mental health, Alana turned away from what she described as conventional medicine’s failures and toward approaches that aim to bridge science and alternative healing.

That background informed the tone of the session. This was not a detached academic lecture. It was a call to reconsider what the body is capable of when given, in her view, the right environmental conditions.

The Salamander As Biohacker

To explain regeneration, Alana reached for a creature more often found in biology textbooks than in longevity clinics: the salamander.

For her, the animal represented the gold standard of repair, able to regrow limbs and restore damaged tissue with a fluency humans have long envied. “The best biohacker in the world,” she implied, was not a Silicon Valley executive or elite athlete, but a small amphibian that had already solved the problem of renewal.

The comparison was not merely rhetorical. Alana used the salamander as a biological metaphor for what she believes hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help awaken in humans: latent regenerative capacity, stem cell activity and tissue renewal.

What Happens Inside The Chamber

At the centre of the presentation was the hyperbaric oxygen chamber itself, which Alana described as a pressurised vessel governed by basic gas laws, especially Henry’s Law, alongside Boyle’s Law and Dalton’s Law. Under pressure, she said, inhaled oxygen can dissolve more readily into fluids beyond the usual limits of red blood cell transport.

“Within a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, oxygen particles enter the cerebrospinal fluid, lymph, and blood plasma, overcoming the limited capacity of our red blood cells,” she said.

This was the crux of her scientific framing. By saturating plasma and cerebrospinal fluid with oxygen, the therapy, she argued, delivers a supraphysiological supply of the nutrient most essential to cellular energy and repair.

Stem Cells, Repair And The Body’s Internal Reserve

From there, Alana moved to one of the boldest claims in the session: that hyperbaric oxygen can mobilise the body’s own stem cells from the bone marrow through the nitric oxide synthase pathway.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy triggers an extreme mobilization of stem cells from your bone marrow, sending them to sites in the body that are crying out for growth and repair,” she said.

This emphasis on endogenous stem cells was central to her argument. Because these cells originate from within the body, she maintained, they are more naturally accepted and potentially safer than exogenous stem cell interventions. In her telling, hyperbaric oxygen was not adding something foreign, but unlocking an internal reserve the body already possessed.

It was a compelling formulation: repair not as an imported miracle, but as a native process coaxed back into action.

Mitochondria, Stress And The Energy Of Renewal

If regeneration is the goal, Alana suggested, mitochondria are the machinery that makes it possible. Hyperbaric oxygen, in her account, does more than flood tissues with oxygen. It also acts as a homeostatic stressor, prompting mitochondria to adapt by increasing in size, improving efficiency and accelerating fission.

Such mechanisms, she argued, are crucial because repair is energetically expensive. Cells cannot rebuild tissue, regulate inflammation or maintain resilience without a substantial energy supply. Oxygen, in this framework, becomes more than breath. It becomes metabolic currency.

The promise here was not just recovery from injury or fatigue, but a whole-body optimisation of the systems that support vitality.

A Therapy Framed As Anti-Aging

The most arresting moment in the talk came when Alana moved from mechanism to outcome. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, she said, had been shown to increase telomere length by 38 per cent and clear 27 per cent of senescent, or “zombie,” cells.

Those figures gave the presentation its sharpest anti-aging edge. Telomeres have become shorthand for cellular youth, while senescent cells are often cast as agents of decline, inflammation and impaired repair. To lengthen one and remove the other is, in the language of the longevity industry, to push back against biological time itself.

“There is no other lifestyle modification, pharmaceutical drug, or machine on Earth right now that can give us the same regenerative capabilities as hyperbaric oxygen,” Alana said.

It was an expansive claim, delivered with certainty and designed to leave little room for rivals.

Brain Health, Immunity And The Promise Of A Gentler Intervention

Though the presentation’s title foregrounded brain health and recovery, Alana’s wider message was that hyperbaric oxygen might support multiple systems at once. She said even a single session could sharply increase white blood cell activity, giving the immune system a rapid “jump-start.” In her account, regeneration was inseparable from immunity. A body unable to defend itself, she suggested, is a body unable to repair.

She also emphasised the therapy’s accessibility in experiential terms. “Hyperbaric oxygen is a painless and non-invasive treatment prescribed by nature, using oxygen as a nutrient to revitalize the body and jump-start the immune system,” she said.

That language mattered. In a health culture often marked by invasive interventions, punishing protocols and expensive experimentation, Alana presented hyperbaric oxygen as something gentler: technologically sophisticated, yet natural in substance.

The Seductive Idea Of Controlling Age

What made the session resonate was not only its catalogue of physiological claims, but the deeper longing it addressed. The desire to separate age from time, to preserve vitality, to recover what injury, stress and illness have taken away, is among the oldest dreams in medicine.

Alana’s presentation at Biohacker Summit 2022 Helsinki gave that dream a chamber, a mechanism and a vocabulary of regeneration. In her telling, oxygen was not simply life-sustaining. It was life-restoring.
