Industry expert reveals "mission impossible" of navigating supplement market at HOLOLIFE Summit

Claudia Armstead outlines five-step framework for consumers bewildered by misleading claims and poor quality products

At the HOLOLIFE Summit in Tallinn this weekend, supplement industry leader Claudia Armstead delivered a stark warning about the challenges consumers face when trying to select dietary supplements that are both safe and effective.

Speaking to a packed audience at the annual wellness conference on Saturday, Armstead, the Chief Operating Officer of Intelligent Labs, presented alarming statistics about the state of the industry, revealing that as many as 89% of sports supplements do not accurately match their label claims.

"As brands, we have an absolute responsibility to ensure that whatever we put out there is not just great marketing but also a safe, transparent, good quality product," Armstead told attendees during her presentation titled "Choosing the Right Supplement: Mission Impossible or Winning Strategy?"

Industry plagued by transparency issues and inaccurate claims

Armstead highlighted findings from multiple studies showing widespread problems across the supplement sector. According to research she cited, weight loss supplements frequently contain ingredients in amounts that differ significantly from their labels, while a European study of Ginkgo Biloba products found considerable discrepancies between advertised and actual dosages.

The situation appears particularly concerning in European markets, where a Spanish study of over 400 radio advertisements found that 80% made unauthorized functional claims, while 20% included illegal disease-related claims that could mislead vulnerable consumers.

"There's a fundamental lack of transparency in the supplement industry," Armstead explained. "What we require is a return to strong foundations: clarity and sustainability in the products we create."

The five-step checklist for supplement selection

The centerpiece of Armstead's presentation was what she termed "The Ultimate Supplement Checklist" – a framework designed to help consumers navigate the confusing landscape of dietary supplements:

Ingredient transparency and label accuracy

"Look for labels that list active ingredients with corresponding dosages and avoid proprietary blends, as you never know how much of each ingredient is present," Armstead advised. She emphasized the importance of checking that claims comply with local regulations, noting that the same product often carries different claims in different markets.

Third-party testing and certifications

Brands that highlight independent testing for their products immediately signal greater trustworthiness, according to Armstead. "A brand with nothing to hide will publish their test results openly," she said, recommending consumers look for certifications from organizations like US Pharmacopoeia or Informed Choice.

Sourcing and manufacturing quality

Products should be manufactured in facilities that follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), with transparent information about ingredient sourcing. "Country of origin matters," Armstead noted, pointing out that the USA, Japan, Australia and EU markets typically enforce stricter regulations.

Science-backed formulation

"Are ingredients clinically studied? Are there trials proving efficacy?" Armstead asked, suggesting consumers use resources like PubMed to verify whether supplement ingredients have genuine scientific backing. She warned against products that rely on marketing hype rather than evidence.

Customer reviews and brand reputation

While acknowledging the value of consumer feedback, Armstead cautioned that reviews should come from verified sources. She also recommended researching brands for any history of recalls or regulatory warnings.

Common myths debunked

The presentation systematically dismantled several persistent myths about supplements, including the notion that "natural" automatically means "safer" and that higher doses always deliver better results.

"Bio individuality matters: age, gender, lifestyle, and medical history impact how supplements affect you, so what works for one may not work for another," Armstead explained, challenging the one-size-fits-all approach that dominates much of the industry.

She was particularly critical of the misconception that supplements undergo rigorous pre-market approval. "In the US, supplements are not pre-market regulated. Only third-party testing guarantees product contents and safety," she said.

The future is personalized

Looking ahead, Armstead described an evolving industry where personalization will become increasingly important. She outlined emerging technologies that promise to deliver more tailored approaches to supplementation:

"The future is personalized: AI-driven supplement personalization, genetic testing, and microbiome analysis will tailor health solutions uniquely to you," she said, explaining how these technologies can analyze individual needs based on factors ranging from gut bacteria profiles to genetic predispositions.

For the hundreds of health industry professionals and enthusiasts gathered at the three-day HOLOLIFE Summit, which concluded on Sunday, Armstead's presentation offered both a warning about current industry practices and hope for more transparent, evidence-based approaches in the future.

"Not all supplements are created equal," she concluded. "Knowing what to look for is your best defense in a market flooded with options of varying quality."

Frequently asked questions

What is Claudia Armstead's supplement checklist?

A five-step framework for buyers, beginning with ingredient transparency and label accuracy, then third-party testing and certifications, then sourcing and manufacturing quality. Armstead, chief operating officer of Intelligent Labs, built the list around the transparency problems she sees across the sector.

Why should buyers avoid proprietary blends?

Because you never know how much of each ingredient is present. Armstead advised looking for labels that list active ingredients with corresponding dosages, and checking that claims comply with local regulations, noting that the same product often carries different claims in different markets.

Which certifications signal a trustworthy brand?

Armstead pointed to independent testing as the clearest signal, recommending certifications from organisations such as US Pharmacopoeia or Informed Choice. Her rule of thumb is simple: a brand with nothing to hide will publish its test results openly.
