Fear is the fuel: five lessons from Don Diablo

When Don Diablo was a child, doctors told his family he might not live beyond his teens. Heart failure. Lung failure. "We have no idea."

He grew up dreaming he would die at the age he is now.

So here he is. Biohacking away.

Today Don plays for crowds of 50,000, has designed for Star Wars and Stranger Things, and shows his art in museums. I sat down with him in Estonia for the new Biohacker's Podcast episode, Fear Is the Fuel. Listen here.

Almost every high performer I meet carries a wounding story. Don's is one of the clearest I have heard. Here are five things I took from it.

1. Fear is a compass, not a stop sign

"If you're not fearing what you're doing, that means you're not growing."

Every decision that could have gone terribly wrong became a step up. A DJ went into fashion and reached the top 1% of Shopify stores within a year. Then he chose the scariest move of all: becoming a fine artist.

2. Discipline is the main thread

Don once weighed 108 kg. Today a trainer comes by every morning, and he has fasted up to seven days on water. On day seven his trainer kept loading the barbell: "You've never pushed this much."

The mechanism is old. Our ancestors used it to survive famine. Don uses it to perform.

3. Principles have a price. Pay it.

Don has never had a drop of alcohol or a cigarette. When an energy drink brand and a cigarette brand offered him serious money, he said no. "I can drink the water. You guys have water?"

4. Pain can become something others feel

In his father's last months, one conversation settled a lifelong doubt: it's okay to be successful. "Successful doesn't mean you're a sellout." Don recorded a little instrument he found in the hospital hallway and turned a letter to his father into a song. It became the anthem for Stand Up Against Cancer and his first Top 40 record.

5. It's not what you do, it's who you are

It took Don 20 years to find a shred of success. People don't buy a ticket for one track. They buy the whole person: the body of work, the journey. Even his AI is trained on his own voice and his own history. The more personal, the more human.

The full conversation is 41 minutes. Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Amazon Music, and watch the short clips on Instagram.
